Spencer Korwin Obituary, Cause of Death – Team USA Triathlete Dies at 38 in Shelter Island Drowning
Spencer M. Korwin, 38, a Manhattan father, former Team USA triathlete, and athletic wellness coach, died Wednesday after drowning during a family vacation on Shelter Island, New York.
Korwin entered the water at approximately 8 a.m. for a morning swim from a dock where he was staying with his family. When he did not return, his wife alerted hotel staff, who contacted emergency services.

Authorities determined that Korwin drowned after divers found him underwater at approximately 3 p.m., several hours after he went missing.
Shelter Island police said investigators working with the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office believe the death was accidental and that no criminality is suspected. The investigation remains active, however, and the medical examiner will determine the official cause and manner of death.
Korwin was found near the same dock from which he had entered the water earlier that morning.
Search for the Missing Swimmer
Shelter Island Town Police, the Shelter Island Fire Department, and Shelter Island Town EMS responded after Korwin was reported missing.
An extensive search was conducted in the Crescent Beach-North Channel area of Shelter Island Sound. The operation included multiple marine units and police helicopters before divers ultimately located him underwater.
The sudden loss left his family and the local endurance-sports community mourning a man known for his athletic accomplishments and commitment to helping others.
Spencer Korwin’s Triathlon Career
Korwin was a former Team USA triathlete who competed at the Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, after qualifying for Team USA in 2012.
He also achieved first-place finishes at the Montauk Point Lighthouse Triathlon and the Mighty Montauk Sprint Triathlon, according to information from his professional profile.
